Daffodil
Beautiful, striking and bold the daffodil is a common flower that comes out early spring time. The trumpet shaped flower comes in a variety of yellows, oranges and shades of white. The Daffodil comes from the Narcissus Species. The name Narcissus comes from the Narcissus found in Greek Mythology. There are many versions of the tales about Narcissus one is that he fell in love with his own reflection and when looking in a pool of water he was transfixed on his reflection to the extent that he fell in and drowned and after a daffodil grew where he died. Another version is that he he stayed transfixed on his reflextion in the pool and the gods thought he would die of starvation so they changed him into the flower to stay there forever.
There are many different species of this flower which include Narcissus poeticus (known as "Poet's Daffodil"). The daffodi is a Euopean plant and was first cultivated by the Romans, it has become very popular over time especially here in the UK where they are grown and we export to other countries such as Holland. Galanthine is a substance which is found in the daffodil bulb which is being used to fight Alzheimers disease. |
