Cucumber
The popular vegetable the cucumber is eatern all over the world.They have been around for centuries and were first domesticated in India and then spread to Europe and Asia. The cucumber comes from the gourd family which like melons and pumpkins all come from the Cucurbitaceae family.
The cucumber is a long green vegetable that is dark green on the outside and light pale green on the inside. The inside is about 20 degrees colder than the outside hense the saying "cool as a cucumber". Cucumbers are usually eatern raw and used in salads along side with tomatos, lettuce, peppers and celery.
They are simple to grow and can either be grown in the green house or in your garden after the frost has passed. They like warm moistured soil, where the seedlings need to be planted in rows about 1/2 to 1 inch deep. Be patient and in time the plant will produce small cucumbers which depending on whether you are looking at using them for pickles is when they need to be picked. For pickling no longer than 2 inches long. For dills no longer than 4- 6 inches long and for regular cucumbers that are used for slicing and salads 8 inches long.
