Crocosmia originates from south Africa, but can be found in places such as Madagascar or Zimbabwe. The plant Montbretia got its original name from Antoine François Ernest Conquebert de Monbret who was the botanist that accompanied Napoleon on his Egypt campaign in 1798.
The Crocosmia mainly is in season between June and September
Crocosmia must not be left out of water too long, or else their colourful orange flowers will soon fade. Cut the end of the stems at an angle and place them in lukewarm water containing cut flower food.
In the UK their sprays of oranges, reds and yellows attract insects such as hoverflies to the garden. Hoverflies are a natural predator, and like the ladybird, eat aphids and greenfly.
