Broad Bean
Native to Africa and Asia the green broad bean along with the other varities of bean all come from the Fabaceae family. Easy and popular to grow the broad bean plant reaches up to 1.7m tall in height and produces leaves which are between 10-25 cm long. The plant is a popular climbing plant which grows small long pods which hold a number of broad beans inside. Used in many dishes across the world which include soups, stews, cassoroles and used along side other vegetables such as carrots, cabbage and broccoli. Not only are they rich in vitamin A, vitamin C and protein but the broad bean also contains a L-dopa which is substance that is used to fight the disease Parkinsons diease. |
